After graduating from Gakushuin University’s Faculty of Political Science and Economics in 1963, he joined Toei Doga (now Toei Animation). In 1985, he participated in the founding of Studio Ghibli. His film \u003cem\u003eSpirited Away\u003c\/em\u003e won the Golden Bear at the 52nd Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Oscars. At the 62nd Venice International Film Festival, he received the Honorary Golden Lion. He was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2012, and in November 2014 received an Honorary Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In March 2024, his film \u003cem\u003eThe Boy and the Heron\u003c\/em\u003e won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, marking his second win after 21 years. In May of the same year, Studio Ghibli received the Honorary Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and in September he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
