“La France” is a Japanese name for a Western pear variety discovered in 1864 by Claude Blanchet in France. It was introduced to Japan in 1903 (Meiji 36) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce’s horticultural testing site, mainly as a pollinator for other Western pears such as Bartlett.
As La France pears require significant time and care from flowering to fruiting, they were initially used almost exclusively for pollination. However, as canned Bartlett pears became widely available, demand for fresh pears increased, leading to renewed appreciation for the exceptional flavor of La France pears.
Today, La France is the most widely produced Western pear variety in Japan, accounting for about 65% of all Western pear production. In contrast, cultivation in France and other European countries has largely disappeared due to the labor‑intensive nature of the variety.
La France pears are harvested while still green and firm. At this stage, the flesh contains starch and tastes hard and gritty. After pre‑cooling at around 4°C for one to two weeks, followed by about one week of ripening, the starch converts into sugars, and vitamins B and C increase. As pectin becomes water‑soluble during ripening, the texture transforms into a smooth, melt‑in‑the‑mouth consistency.
The best season is from November to December. With a sugar content of 14–15 degrees, the pears offer a rich sweetness balanced by gentle acidity, along with a fragrant aroma and deep, mellow flavor.
The main production area is Yamagata Prefecture, followed by Nagano, Iwate, and Fukushima. Yamagata alone produces nearly 70% of all La France pears in Japan.
