“Hikari no Utsuwa” is the first photography book by Anna Sukrikari Ochiai.
Set in Romania, the homeland of the artist’s father, this collection consists of photographs captured during her approximately one-year stay there. For Ochiai, who has continued searching for her roots between her two homelands—Japan and Romania—this journey became her first profound step toward another home that she had never fully encountered before.
Within herself existed a dormant sense of connection—something she describes as a “transparent organ.” It was not her birth mother or biological father who breathed life into this inner part of her, but the many “mothers and fathers” she met along the way. Through the lives of people deeply connected to the land, their beliefs, and their relationship with nature, the time they have accumulated gradually became experiences and memories that began to circulate within her.
The quiet presence of winter wrapped in soft light, flowers and prayers announcing the arrival of spring, the lively rhythms of daily life beneath the summer sun, and the deepening moments that accompany autumn’s harvest—all of these scenes and encounters carry their own stories while quietly revealing the rhythm of life rooted in the land.
Under the light that falls regardless of the boundaries created by people, all things become gently connected.
“Hikari no Utsuwa” is both a record of an artist’s process of reconnecting with her own origins and a work that illuminates the invisible vessels within each of us. It captures the memories held by the land and the moments shared with the people she encountered throughout this journey.
