The heartwarming friendship between the beloved G1 racehorse Meisho Doto and Met, the boss cat of the retired horse farm, returns in this touching photo book documenting the challenges and miracles that have taken place at Northern Lake.
Northern Lake is a retirement farm located in Niikappu Town, Hokkaido, where horses that have finished their racing and breeding careers spend their remaining years in peace.
One day, a male brown-and-white cat named Met suddenly appeared at the farm. Fearlessly living among horses many times his size, Met quickly became part of the farm community and developed special friendships with the horses.
His closest companion is Meisho Doto (owned by the Certified NPO Retirement Horse Association). Photos of Met relaxing while riding on Doto’s back became a huge sensation on social media.
More than two years have passed since the release of the first photo book, “Boss Cat Met and Meisho Doto: The Miracle of Retired Horse Farm Northern Lake,” and many changes have taken place at Northern Lake.
A new horse named Nekopanchi, whose name shares a connection with Met, joined the farm. Meisho Doto also underwent a high-risk abdominal surgery at the age of 28. Last autumn, crowdfunding support was raised to help build a new stable where the horses can live more safely and comfortably.
Through beautiful and heartwarming photographs of cats and horses, author Sachie Sasaki tells the story of the many changes at Northern Lake, while capturing the unchanging bond between Met and the horses.
A portion of the book’s sales will be used to support the horses at Northern Lake.
Author Profile
Sachie Sasaki
Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. She became interested in horse racing after hearing news of the racehorse Ten Point’s injury, eventually becoming a horse racing writer after many experiences and career changes.
Concerned about what happens to horses after retirement from racing, she wrote the retirement horse column “Second Story: Where Are They Now?” for netkeiba, Japan’s largest horse racing information service.
Since July 2020, she has worked as a general assistant at Northern Lake. She also writes the “Northern Lake Diary” series for the retired horse support website Loveuma.
Her personal motto is: “Everyone is a beginner on the day called today.”
